  • Courses are open to all adults regardless of prior qualifications or experience
  • Anyone who wants to develop their knowledge and understanding of up to date best practice in sport
  • Course places are also available to current University of Ulster students.

Courses

  • All courses are designed and delivered by the University of Ulster’s, School of Sport Studies, based on the Jordanstown Campus.
  • All courses involve contact hours with expert tutors and also an element of self directed learning.
  • Weekend courses will normally run Saturday 10-5pm & Sunday 12-5pm.
  • Pleased note the majority of courses will only run on the request of external organisations.

Sport Psychology for Coaches:

Module Code PPD111
This course runs over four days. Through a combination of lectures and practical's, the course uses both sport and mainstream psychology to increase the understanding of human behaviour in a sport setting. Examining the contribution of the mental aspect in sport including motivation, anxiety and stress, attention and concentration, mental imagery and working with teams.

Developing Children's Basic Sport Skills:

Focuses on the teaching and coaching of children’s fundamental movement patterns, core athletic skills and how these impact upon performance in a range of sporting activities. Students will learn the role of the coach/teacher in this development whilst learning how to help children progress.

Good Practice in Children’s Sport:

Module Code PPD114
Provides a fundamental understanding of good practice in the management and organisation of children’s sport. The Sport NI course ‘Safe Guarding Children and Young People in Sport’ will run as part of this module.

Sports Event Management:

The events industry has the potential to attract very large audiences and interest from across the community.  This module introduces students to the discipline, examines the nature and scope of events, revises the business of planning and provides practical training in conjunction with a major local sporting event.

Students engage in specific activities to improve their coaching abilities. The module examines techniques, tactics and skills whilst relating theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

Individuals seeking to work in a community setting will develop the skills and competencies needed to lead sport and physical activity. The course will enhance the ability to lead sport specific activities and the planning and implementation of events, contributing to the social and physical development of people of all ages.

Introduction to Strength and Conditioning for Coaches:

The practical nature of strength and conditioning with its supporting scientific theory provide an exciting and varied area of study. The module, both theoretical and practical, provides an introduction to the knowledge, skills and abilities required by strength and conditioning coaches.

Introduction to Applied Performance Analysis

Course Dates: Feb/March 2011 (County Donegal)

Module Code PPD128
Effective coaching and service support requires an understanding of performance analysis which can help improve all levels of performance. This course will develop an understanding of the basic performance analysis and recording systems. It will also develop a capacity to recognise and measure key performance indicators and present data in an appropriate and assessable manner.

Event Management for Volunteers 

Course Dates: 22nd January 10am-6pm & 23th January 10am-3pm, 2011.

Module Code PPD025
This module introduces students to event management for volunteers. It will provide an awareness and fundamental understanding of the disciplines involved in event management, including the importance of good practice. Learning will be enhanced through a combination of lectures, practical sessions and self learning.

The University of Ulster and Volunteer Now are working in conjunction to develop Northern Ireland’s Volunteers in preparation for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the 2013 World Police and Fire Games, being hosted in Belfast. 

To gain your accreditation full course attendance is compulsory and all participants must complete a 15hr logbook detailing their volunteer involvement.

Integration and Good Relations through Sport and Physical Activity 

Course Dates:

Module Code PPD044
This course will focus on the student gaining an understanding of how sport can act as a medium to improve integration and establish positive relations. The aim of the module is to develop knowledge and understanding of issues that prevent integration and inclusion in sport and physical activity. The content shall focus on culture and attitudes, equality and diversity, conflict identification and resolution, sports leadership, coaching skills, communication skills.

Modules are being added to all the time and can be specifically designed to suit any sport or Governing Bodies requirements.

How to Enrol

 

There are currently 2 parts to this process for applicants.

Initially you must go to the online application form Here and choose the application form with the programme CPPD UG Modules (L&HS) PT and in the course choice list the module name and code (for example, PPD025 Event Management for Volunteers).

Full instructions on how to complete the forms can be found Here

 

On submission of the application students will be contacted to tell them if they have been accepted, and then given instructions for online enrolment. It is during online enrolment that the fee must be paid by the student.

 

After enrolment students will be contacted five days prior to the course commencing to confirm arrangements.
